If you can't get enough rain at home then perhaps this is the place for you: Cherrapunji (traditionally 'Sohra') lies high up in one of the Khasi hill states in Meghalaya, India, and holds a prime position on the southern-most point of a plateau overlooking the border with Bangladesh, at the top of a set of towering cliffs. Set as they are, facing the distant Bay of Bengal to the south, these cliffs are the first site at which the monsoon clouds are forced to deposit their moisture. Monsoon clouds are also channelled from the north east down the Brahmaputra Valley, and being on the outer corner as the valley swings westward, Cherrapunji receives their best efforts, too. This quiet tribal village in fact receives the highest annual rainfall in the world (though this claim to fame has been contested by nearby villages) but ironically, suffers from drought and poor soil quality during the dry seasons.

The world's most impressive monsoon aside, Cherrapunji is also at the centre of some of India's most strikingly beautiful scenery and has truly impressive views.
