The Great Arab Revolt Plaza & Jordan's Design and Trade Centre

Listed under Squares, Streets & Urban Spaces in Aqaba, Jordan.

Visitors exploring the southern seaside town of Aqaba are drawn to the Great Arab Revolt Plaza and its 137 meters tall flag commemorating the 1916 start of the struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire. Tourist facilities including a visitor centre, a small museum displaying Byzantine and early Islamic artefacts, the ruins of a 16th century Mamluk fort partially destroyed in a WWI bombardment as well as a Noor Al Hussein Foundation’s retail outlet are all located around the Plaza.

The Noor Al Hussein Foundation provides technical and management training to micro-business owners, focusing on the empowerment of women, and also provides a space for business owners to promote and sell their handiwork. Those looking for quality souvenirs should visit the Jordan Design and Trade Centre, a market outlet showcasing some of the country’s best creations. Silver jewellery in original designs, apple and apricot jam, olive oil, soaps deliciously scented with mint, geranium, pomegranate, rosemary, and lavender, embroidered pillow covers, rugs, baskets, and pottery are only some of the handmade products on offer. This one-stop shop brings traditional handicrafts made by communities from all over Jordan under one roof. The merchandise is attractively displayed and sold at fixed prices, which makes the shopping experience hassle-free.
