200 metres by 312 metres, this red gravel laid square is one of the largest in Europe. And if you're only counting pedestrianised squares sans trees, greenery and other obstacles, then it gets the award for Europe's largest. In pride of place in this cleared area is a statue of King Louis XIV riding a horse.

As with most old European squares a lot of things have happened here. And it's central to the shops and the city's main cultural points of interest – the Art Gallery runs down one of its sides.

The local tourist office has a pavilion on the square making it easy to find. In winter it gains and ice rink and a Ferris wheel.
