The design of this square is a bit of an ad-on to the rest of the city rather than a historically significant part of the layout – instead of a traditional European town square you've got modern art and modern looking expanses of concrete part covered by a modern steel and glass atrium. Around the edge of the square are the usual main square liners, you have your museum, your art gallery, and St. Paul's Cathedral. And shops, cafes and cinemas. One of the square's focal points is a big screen on which are broadcast important sporting and artistic events and people generally gather here for rallies and free entertainment and that sort of thing. It was a bit controversial when it was built – it cost more than it was supposed to and took longer to build than it was supposed to, and a lot of people thought it was ugly and a waste of tax payer's money and too modern... But now it's done people use it and don't think about it much any more.
One of the nice things about Federation Square are the hundreds of sandstone paving stones which are naturally a myriad of outback colours.
This very central piece of land actually used to be the morgue.
