The Woodlyn Park in Otorohanga offers a choice of three bizarre accommodations for you to stay in whilst you explore the Waitomo Caves Village or the glow worm caves. The first is a refurbished 1950s train carriage which not only has three rooms sleeping up to six people, but has also had a terrace added so instead of jumping three feet to the ground, you can alight comfortably onto this new mini-platform to eat dinner or relax with your friends. At the hobbit motel you won’t be jumping down, but climbing out of one of its two units that are sunk into the ground in much the same as they are in Tolkien’s fictional Shire. Their subterranean position and their large round windows are, however, all they share with the hobbit dwellings in Lord of the Rings, but nonetheless very comfortable and novel lodgings. Finally the park offers a 1950s converted Bristol Freighter Plane, one of the last allied planes out of Vietnam. You can opt for either the tail end or the cockpit and sleep soundly in the knowledge that this is the only accommodation of its type in the world.
