Some hotels have been criticised for their monastery-like atmosphere but this one has to be applauded for it. The Schottenstift Monastery Guesthouse is actually part of an old Benedictine monastery and you can hear the monks chanting sometimes when coming in or out, which makes a nice change from business parties. Founded in 1155 the guesthouse is relatively modern while the entrance of a vast door and winding staircase has a DaVinci code flavour to it. The best bit has to be the location though. Throwing open the windows will subject you to the sights and sounds of Freyung and the Christmas market and the pealing bells are actually a rather refreshing wake-up call, but could be a nightmare if you’re scared of bells or wake-up calls.
