The numerous Jack the Ripper tours are the perfect way to add a chill to a Summer evening in London, and a number of them are led by expert Jack the Ripper historians, who can engender a genuine morbid fascination in their tour groups by knowing the smallest details of the gruesome murders. The tour guides' abilities in pointing out the actual places that are said to still echo with the horror of the Ripper's acts, some unchanged since 1888, do better justice to the tale than jokey re-enactments and amateur actors dressed as ghosts. It is genuinely difficult to walk the old Whitechapel alleys and understand the poverty and terror rife in the area when the murders took place, without wanting to learn more at the end. All the usual theories are covered, and every guide will have a preferred one, but the 'whodunnit' debate has raged for well over a century and allows each member of the group to feel like a detective rather than a tourist.
