Malé is the name of the island and the city. It’s one of the largest single islands in the Maldives, this country of sand and shallow, bright blue waters, and was traditionally the King’s Island. It’s also one of the most urban islands in the group – in fact if you’re not able to pay to stay on your own private island or on one of the island resorts you may well end up here – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing – Malé is where a third of this country’s population lives, so the most happening place in the group. Motorbikes buzz between colourful office blocks and workers, this is the Maldivian island where things get done.

The alcohol free bars and restaurants may take a bit of getting used to but a feast of hedonism is on offer at the amazingly lively markets – remember this is a pretty remote place with not much soil. Malé is an island for visitors looking to experience the real life of the Maldives, not just lux beach life.
