The Overland Track is Australia's most famous multi-day trek, offering an magnificent traverse of the World Heritage Wilderness. The 70km track winds its way through a sub-alpine landscape of soaring dolerite peaks, glacial lakes, heathlands, tall forests and waterfalls. The Overland Track is an exceptional trek and also offers access to the peaks and wilderness beyond. The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife limit the number of trekkers to control the impact, a maximum of 60 trekkers per day are allowed and Overland Track Permits cost $120 per person and should be booked well in adavnce. Many trekkers choose to join a guided bushwalk that provides food, equipment and safety in this rugged environment.

I've done the track three times. It is a very different part of Australia than many people are familiar with - rocky, mountainous and clearly shaped by the last ice age. The text above suggests going with a tour group. This isn't really necessary, the track is clearly marked and not too difficult - it is really accissble to any reasonable fit person who has the right gear. The book 'The Overland Track' by Warwick Sprawson has everything you need to know if you are thinking of doing the walk.
