The trek to Gokyo Ri is a popular alternative or add-on to the Everest Base Camp/Kalapattar trek. After Namche Bazaar, instead of continuing up the Dudi Khosi valley you turn left up the Gokyo valley, eventually passing a series of lovely high altitude lakes before reaching the settlement of Gokyo. Here are a number of lodges and restaurants catering to trekkers. An early morning start is advised for the ascent of Gokyo Ri, which offers a more distant view of Everest than Kalapattar but also provides good views of more of the world's highest mountains, including Cho Oyu and Makalu. Altitude sickness is more common on this trek than the Everest Base Camp one due to the more rapid ascent so be careful.

There are risks

The popular trip of flying into Lukla then trekking: you should know that flights are routinely canceled. CANCELED. Sometimes for days at a time due to weather and it can really mess up your trip. We used One World Trekking which was not terribly honest on the risk. The airport is very dirty, we got sick waiting for 3 days to fly up. Yes it is wonderful sites, but it can get completely messed up. Use a company that understands the risk, are honest about the risks and offers some back up plan.

Thanks for the heads up James. Did you end up getting to trek or not? It's easy to see that it could be risky in retrospect, but hard to know what to ask up front.
