The Centovalli Railway, which dates from the 1920s, steams its slow way out of Locarno and west across the border into Italy, drawing the journey to a leisurely close in Domodossola. Its name is apt, as the middle portion of the trip takes in the high, steep hillsides and fabulous views of a region of more than a hundred valleys, which rise and plunge right next to the track as the train passes through.

For a spectacular mix of lake and mountains, this alpine run is a classic.

A must see..

The whole Centovalli rail trip was unreal. Stopped off in S.Maria Maggiore for a hot chocolate - the best ever!! It was wintertime...

Stayed overnight in Locarno - absolutely stunning, the best hotel on our European trip - The Jazz Hotel.

The town was beautiful and the restaurants great.

Would be great to see again but summer would be so busy.....

Which dates did you travel - I was planning on summer but you're right - it's very, very busy...

It was between Christmas and New Year.
