The Centovalli Railway, which dates from the 1920s, steams its slow way out of Locarno and west across the border into Italy, drawing the journey to a leisurely close in Domodossola. Its name is apt, as the middle portion of the trip takes in the high, steep hillsides and fabulous views of a region of more than a hundred valleys, which rise and plunge right next to the track as the train passes through.

For a spectacular mix of lake and mountains, this alpine run is a classic.
