In an alpine saddle below the Jungfrau is Europe’s highest Railway Station, the Jungfraujoch at 3454 metres. To get there you ride through a tunnel winding inside the mountain which passes behind the Eiger’s infamous north face and offers unequaled views of it from its foot where there is a station, Kleine Scheidegg. From the tunnel’s windows you can see as far as Germany’s Black Forest and Frances Vosges Mountains, but one of the most spectacular, apart from the Eiger is that of the 22kms of the Aletsch Glacier.
Here the snow never melts. And, because if you take a train up a mountain you’re probably interested in comfortable scenery, there is a restaurant, two hotels and even a cinema.
The tunnel is a fairly serious engineering achievement, especially considering it was started in 1896, and is 7kms long on an angle approaching 25 degrees.
