This region is part of the Chukchi Peninsula, home to the indigenous Chukchi people. These people live on the tundra, primarily herding reindeer. Protected to some extent under Soviet rule, when communities were organised, supported and educated, privatisation has meant many people now rely on cultural tourism for income.
