Though the Spanish conquistadors were searching for a city of gold many modern day visitors prefer silver. In the form of Mexico's traditional jewellery with its unique design and patterns. Taxco is where a lot of the colonial silver came from, it was mined nearby, but it's also where some of Mexico's best silversmiths have always been able to be found, so it's an excellent place to buy your Mexican silver if that's on your travel here todo list.

Taxco is also a very pretty colonial town – supposedly one of the prettiest in Mexico, but who knows how you could tell something like that. It is built on the side of a hill and does have lovely patterned cobbled streets that wind between buildings topped with bright terracotta coloured tiles, `and end up in the kinds of squares that are just a bit too tight for car traffic so are almost enforced to retain their, what people call, 'old world charms'. It's certainly in the interests of the town to keep its steeply sloping streets beautiful – something like have the people who live in the area make their living off tourism – and that includes the purveyors of wonderful silver, who line the streets in shops and markets.

On the north side of town is Hacienda de El Chorrillo, one of the oldest silver producers in the area, constructed by soldiers of Hernán Cortés.
