For those who want to escape to a place of rich culture, history, and art; St. Tropez could be a worthy candidate - though perhaps only 1% of visitors have any of this in mind. A small fishing village turned hedonist hotspot, St. Tropez is home to some wonderful avant-garde art galleries, trading on former residents such as Signac and Matisse. The Annonciade Museum, for example, houses an excellent modern collection dating from 1890-1950. Another attraction is the 16th century Citadel of St. Tropez, and the markets and small port are bristling with fresh local produce and fresh fish. However... most people come for the (frighteningly expensive) nightlife and the social scene, to see and be seen. For that it is still without peer. However, the best time to see it as it should be seen, without all the Bentleys and the helicopters, is at Christmas time, when local families come down to the port to see Father Christmas arrive by sea.
