Unlike most Alaskan towns, Sitka has a rich history of European influence. Russian conflict with the natives can be seen through the establishment of the Russian Orthodox Church, its influence still being felt today. Historic buildings have been preserved and the Russian atmosphere makes Sitka a must-see Alaskan town. It's usually fairly steady with tourists and does not suffer from overcrowding at any time of the year. A visit is always welcomed by the natives who still have a strong cultural influence within the town.
