The town of Sihanoukville has stretches of beach on all sides but one, it’s surrounded by the Bay of Thailand, littered with those islands like rocky daggers. Beachside bars and grass hut restaurants and a few larger resorts edge up on the clean sand, so you don’t even have to leave the beach if you don’t want to.
If you can tear yourself away you might want to take a trip out to one of the islands and do some snorkelling or diving, or if you’re feeling in need of a cultural injection you could visit one of the local Buddhist temples.
The best time of year to visit is November though February. Don’t expect the infrastructure of the Thai resorts, you still need to have your wits about you here.

Down to your last dollar? or found one in your shirt pocket when checking your laundry? Here’s a few ways of spending it here in Sihanoukville.
1 - Take a motodop (taxi bike) from central Sihanoukville to either Victory Beach, Ochheuteal Beach or Serendipity Beach.
2 - Enjoy a ‘fishburger’ at the Café alongside the Total Gas Station, very tasty.
3 - Buy two bunches of Bananas and go feed the monkeys in the trees near the Independence Hotel or down at the ‘lower’ Wat (temple).
4 - Partake of 2 (maybe 3) glasses of Angkor Beer during the Happy Hour at Utopia Bar in Backpacker Central, only 1500 riel per glass.
5 - Get a big bag of mixed fruit from the vendors down on Ochheuteal Beach.
6 - Have a delicious Pork, Egg and Rice Breakfast from the stall that’s been set up inside the old Events Hall. Only open till 9am.
7 - Get your shoes shined by the hardworking Street Kids ….. twice!
8 - Buy four packs of Ara Cigarettes.
9 - Buy a DVD Movie from shop across from the Freedom Bar.
10 - Have two scoops of homemade Ice Cream from Café Colonia on Ekareach Street.
With the Global Credit Crunch and recession in various Countries, times are hard around the world at the moment, but it’s nice to know that a dollar still has some value here in Sihanoukville!
