This small Spanish town flourished in medieval times. The Collegiate Church Cloisters of Santa Juliana and the Regina Coeli Museum preserve that history with their displays of precious religious artifacts and art. Various other museums also pay homage to the past, and 15th century buildings are nestled in between more modern buildings on a number of streets. However, Santillana del Mar is most famous for the Altamira Cave. This famous stomping ground of prehistoric man is located just outside of town and features some of the most remarkable cave paintings yet discovered. They have been deemed a World Heritage site but can be difficult to see because of the limited amount of visitors allowed inside.
