Visited for its well preserved (and car free) medieval town centre, which looks likes something carved onto a cuckoo clock, dating from the middle ages when Rothenburg was an Imperial Free City. A series of walls protect parts of the city, the newest and the one of the oldest are still standing in the oldest part of the city. Sieged several times (local history says one 17th Century siege was broken when the towns mayor was able to drink a gallon of wine in one go.), Rothenburg was spared being flattened in WWII when the local military leader went against Hitler’s orders and surrendered to save the town.
