Prolific Chinese philosopher, Confucius, was born in Qufu in 551 BC. Since his lifetime, the inhabitants of his hometown have erected several extraordinary structures to memorialize the celebrated thinker. The ornately decorated Temple of Confucius was built shortly after his death, and was visited by a number of emperors to pay their respects. The Cemetery of Confucius is his resting place, as well as 2000 years worth of his descendents. The temple and the cemetery, along with the Kong family mansion where the Confucius family lived until 1937, together make up a World Heritage site.
