Conveniently situated near Madras, but eight thousand feet up, Ootacumund became a Summer town for the British colonial inhabitants of the area – a cooler, breezy place where they could avoid the disease and sweltering humidity of the city – as was the case with many hill towns. Snooker is believed to have been invented in the ‘Ooty Club’ house here during the British Raj.
The surrounding forested Nilgiri Hills, or ‘blue hills’ as they are also known, are rich with wildlife and rare fauna and make wonderful trekking country for most of the year, though it can be cold here in the winter months. The town is a good central point for tourists, who can explore by car and on the winding mountain railway to Kallar, visiting tea plantations, the local botanical gardens and some of the smaller, less commercial towns along the way.
