The town of Nesebâr was founded on an island peninsular by Greeks in 510BC on what was an older port on the trade route, in its current incarnation it’s a coastal resort. Several great churches, and around 30 less great churches were built here in the 5th and 6th Centuries, many of which are now in ruins. Wars have ravaged around the town on a couple of occasions which have added to the towns historic significance and damaged buildings. Having been occupied several times, it’s been Roman, Greek, Thracian, Byzantine, Turkish and Bulgarian, Nesebâr has interesting monuments and relics from a variety of civilisations, which is why it has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
