Catholics believe that in 1858 the Virgin revealed herself 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous, a shephard girl who lived near Lourdes, in a cave by the river here. These apparitions have made Lourdes a shrine which attracts millions of pilgrims from all over the world, many looking for a miracle to cure withered limbs, loss of sight, terminal illnesses and other calamities. The Grotto Massabielle is where the Virgin is said to have visited Bernadette. Because it's such a popular attraction, the Grotto is open both day and night, and there is Mass there everyday. Although many – in fact most - leave Lourdes without a miracle, there are people who claim to have been cured while bathing in the springs of Lourdes. The best time to visit is during the daily procession, a very moving affair - and the tacky but strangely compelling souvenir shops are fun to browse in.
