This small city was once Vietnam’s largest port and a very important Japanese, Dutch, Indian and Chinese trading centre during the 16th and 17th Centuries. At one point the town was divided in two by the river, half was Japanese and the unique stone carved covered bridge joining the two halves, ‘Japanese Bridge’ is one of the architectural highlights in a city full of interesting buildings reflecting Hoi An’s mix of influences. Grand and ornately decorated Chinese congregation halls with huge gates are built alongside wooden houses and less fancy European influenced terraces now used as bars, shops and restaurants. The ancient section of the town has been listed as a Heritage Site. The other reasons tourists visit Hoi An are the pale sandy beaches and cheap shopping.
