It's a lot easier to get to the Casamance from The Gambia than even the Lonely Planet make out. Shoot straight down to the coastal border where you can pick up a pirogue (dugout) to cross from one country to another... how cool is that?

Call Eric Bedouet at The Esperanto Lodge in Kafountine to arrange a pickup (+221 77 3056 756) but do it earlier rather than later as mobile/cell service is pretty flaky there. Esperanto Lodge is highly rated in the last two Lonely Planet guides, and incredibly, over a quarter of all the 560 bird species known in this bird-watchers heaven have been seen at the Lodge alone. The food and excellent music help, but what really makes it a stand out is the ambience - pure tranquillity.

Now enjoy the real Africa - and a very cool scene (like Glastonbury twenty years ago) with drums, music, ganga, good food - the French do make a difference - and fabulous trips along the rivers (bolongs) as well as really great beaches.

Enjoy - and let me know how you got on! (john at turquoisefrog dot com if you want any more info).

Remember though that Senegal is one of the poorest countries in the poorest continent. Still, just being there will add to the economy.

Oh, and Esperanto Lodge now has internet too, so you can blog from there!
