The city of Guilin is known for it’s beautiful natural setting of interesting and dramatic rock formations topped by scented forests of everything from pines to bamboo. Two rivers and four lakes add to the unusual scenery of narrow sheer sided mountains popping up out of flat plains, held in such esteem as to be printed on Chinese 20RMB notes.

Guilin’s main attractions for visitors are the Seven-Star Cave and Park, Longshang which it’s excellent view of narrow rice terraces, Elephant Trunk Hill, a naturally formed rock formation arching into a lake like a drinking elephant and the Jingjiang Princes City, a royal palace dating from the Ming Dynasty.

The region around Guilin has some smaller traditional villages and underground cave systems also popular with visitors.

One of the best ways to admire Guilin’s natural assets is by boat along the river. Popular with national as well as international tourists, Guilin is one of four Chinese cities where the priority is to protect cultural heritage and the natural surroundings.
