Diamantina’s history is tightly woven with that of its diamond mines and it is a city still reliant on the mining industry today. Within the Serro de Espinhaco mountains, Diamantia’s 18th century houses are built on steep slopes and cliffs. Not yet ravaged by tourist overcrowding, it’s authentic charm remains intact, however, it’s a popular city among Brazilians especially during Carnival. Visiting the Museu do Diamante, a museum of diamond mining, is one of Diamantina’s main attractions.
