Rather splendid and languid. This is one of Melbourne’s weekend or mini break destinations. A country town with all the pros of a country town: space, peace, slowed pace of life, organic food, space…and a hot spring spa… but with the Melbourne frisson of the satellite literary and foodie festivals and added entertainment laid on for the regularly invading townies. Regular population is probably less than 5,000 - if you’re familiar with Australia you’ll understand that it was a goldmining town so most of it happens on one long street dominated by a rather graceful and now well kept pub building - big verandas and all. For country towns ‘organic food’ gets rather less press than in the city but people here know it’s big business and second to the spa must be one of the towns main attractions. Best time to visit is Autumn - the days are still long and in this kind of spot you’re actually glad to see the back of summer broken and feel a reviving breeze - the trees are nice as well - there is probably a festival for it.
