Cuenca is a tiny walled medieval city in central Spain with a fascinating history and the architectural treasures. Most emblematic of the region are the casas colgadas, the tiny “hanging houses” which perch precariously on the sides of gorges like they might fall to oblivion any moment. Visit Our Lady of Grace Cathedral, the first Gothic church in Spain or make a trip to El Castillo where travellers can explore the old fortress left over from Arabic occupation. All these historical sites are surrounded by the modern city of Cuenca on the outskirts, but in this case, it might be best to stick to the ancient city as the modern bits aren’t nearly as impressive.
