Sometimes you visit a place and imagine that it would be lovely to live there. Well we'd had been to Berwick upon Tweed many times on day trips and thought it was a beautiful town, surrounded by intact Elizabethan walls, located on the Tweed Estuary on the far north eastern coast of Northumberland. Well we moved here in March 2006.

Berwick is best known for its 3 bridges. The old bridge dating from the early 17th century, is now only open to southbound vehicles. Even so I’d prefer if it was pedestrianised as it can be rather daunting as cars whizz past you when you’re walking on the narrow pavement. The Royal Border railway bridge which opened in the 1840s is part of the East Coast main railway line. The Royal Tweed Bridge is the new kid on the block, opening in the 1920s.

The best way to see Berwick is to walk around the town walls. The path is well maintained with some gentle slopes. There's only one road to cross as you walk around the walls so you do get a feel for the old Berwick and some great photo opportunities. You can also walk out to the end of the pier but it can be rather windy here.

There's a large colony of mute swans living in the estuary, who have become almost tame as they've been feed so often by humans. They sometimes sit in the middle of the road and you have to drive around them. You regularly see seals patrolling the estuary, living on a rich diet of salmon. Herons sit patiently on the river bank and we've seen the odd otter. The beach at Spittal, to the east of the estuary mouth is characterised by the towering chimney stack of the a former factory.
