The fact that Bend, Oregon has recently experienced a population boom and a huge increase in tourism has not detracted from its endearing small town charm. Unpretentious and enthusiastic friendliness is the rule of thumb everywhere you go. The place is a nature and sports enthusiast’s dream, with the Ponderosa Pine forest, Cascade Mountains, Great Basin high desert, a number of lakes, and the Deschutes River within easy walking, biking, or driving distance. Fishing and white-water rafting are exciting undertakings in the warmer months, and Mount Hood and Mount Bachelor are extremely popular for skiing and snowboarding. Surprisingly, Bend is great for less athletically inclined individuals as well. In recent years, upscale shopping has begun to spring up in the area, and a number of lovely boutiques and specialty stores have made homes for themselves Downtown. The Old Mill Shopping District is also a recent addition to Bend, with a movie theatre, shops, and plethora of fantastic, riverside restaurants within earshot of the Les Schwab amphitheatre which hosts epic outdoor concerts during the summer.
