Agrigento has every right to be pompous, flashing one of the best preserved architectural legacies of ancient Greece. The outskirts of this Sicilian town boast the quivering ruins of Akragras, a prosperous Greek colony dating back to approximately 580 BC. The majestic Doric temples of this trimmed and maintained site form a ridge known as Valle dei Templi, which is said to rival that of Acropolis in Athens, and is worth about a day’s exploring.
Towards the city centre, Agrigento is vibrant, if slightly crime-ridden. The metropolitan architecture lies in the Akragras’
shadow, with a relatively small selection of Baroque highlights, including the 14th century cathedral and Our Lady of the Greeks church.
