A beautifully and intricately carved stone memorial bearing a large marble plaque with the names of all the victims of the 2002 Bali bombings now stands on the site of Paddy’s Pub, where the bombings took place. Taking up most of the front of the block with its balcony covered in potted plants, the memorial was dedicated on the second anniversary of the bombings on the 12th of October.

202 people, from 21 countries, died in the bombings and thousands were injured. These aren’t huge casualty figures, but vast considering the size of the island and its medical set up.

An annual event has also been set up to mark the anniversary, but with a celebration of life and cleansing rather than too much emphasis on the terror of the attack. The Balinese want us to look back smiling and to keep visiting them.
