Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep Temple

Listed under Temples in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Legends abound as to the original purpose of this mountain-top temple, which holds great religious significance for Buddhists and attracts many pilgrims even today. Is is said to have been the site of the death of a holy white elephant, which carried a piece of Buddha's shoulder bone there as a sign to the king of Lanna to construct a temple. Represented by a huge gilded pagoda, visible for miles around, the temple is approached by a long flight of steps guarded by two stone dragons, and contains many colourful statues of Buddha and Hindu deities, as well as peaceful, delicate shrines, smaller pagodas and heavy temple bells, which were used to announce daily events to worshippers.
