Trichy, as it is most often known, was once the capital of the wealthy Chola dynasty and is the location of some of the most iconic temples in India, not least the largest Hindu temple still in use in the world. Called the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, it is believed to be one of the most important abodes of Lord Vishnu in the Hindu religion and at over six miles in length, it is certainly an imposing spectacle. Legend tells that it was built two thousand years ago on the site of the discovery of a long lost idol of Vishnu left there by a great king.
Ucchi Pillayar Koil is also to be found at Trichy – a massive, double temple to Ganesha and Shiva, hewn out of solid rock in the form of a fortress at the top of a hill, commanding unrivalled views over the bustling city and its two rivers.
