Khajuraho Group of Monuments

Listed under Temples in Madhya Pradesh, India.

The Khajuraho Temples are known as the Temples of Love, for despite their holy purpose of honouring Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma, their outer walls abound with beautiful carvings, many of which depict everyday Indian life but some of which show figures intertwined in tantric sexual poses. Rather than being a celebration of earthly pleasures, these carvings are said to have served as a reminder to worshippers that base thoughts should be kept outside the temple, although followers of Tantrism believed that the fulfilment of desire was one step on the way to enlightenment, so their purpose has never quite been agreed upon. Even without the unusual subject matter of the dense, perfectly-executed exterior stonework, the temples are impressive for their unique architectural style and their number, since they comprise the largest collection of Hindu and Jain temples in India.
