Now part of the city of Kochi, and without a fort, Fort Cochin hosts some of Kerala’s best colonial architecture. Discovered by the Chinese, given to the Portuguese, captured by the Dutch , then by the English, 450 years of control under a foreign power finished in 1947 when Fort Cochin and the rest of India gained independence. Each power added to the landscape from the Chinese with their spider webs of fishing nets in the mangroves and on the waterfront to Portuguese churches, a Dutch fort and British terraces. Even without the colonial ‘guests’ the area has always been wealthy as an important stop on the spice trading routes and some of the best sights are well preserved mansions of wealthy spice traders.
