One of Japan's foremost national treasures, the Horyu Gakumonji temple complex is a series of multi-story pagodas and halls, containing sleeping quarters, classrooms and libraries as well as places of worship, due to its status as a theological college. It was constructed during the middle of the 1st Century and, largely owing to partial reconstruction on a number of occasions, is in excellent condition. This means that it is home to some wonderful, original pieces of art such as statues, carvings and frescoes as well as offering a fascinating insight into the lives of the students of Buddhism during this period.
