Surfing Elands Bay, Elandsbaai or E-Bay

Listed under Surfing in Western Cape, South Africa.

This is a bit of a local classic so most experienced surfers will probably have heard of it. It’s basically a hollow left reef point break but it’s pretty fast, so it’s probably not a great spot for beginners on the western coast. The beach is long and it’s got great dunes - so don’t drive unless you’re used to driving on sand - people were stuck when I was there and we helped dig them out, but the bottom is a rocky reef. It’s also got really really good seafood restaurants, in fact it’s famous for them. It’s not too badly dominated by locals, but if you’re not paying attention you may miss out on a wave. I’d say go mid week. One of the locals told me that when the swell gets big it really goes off and you have to stake your spot ‘cause guys converge on the waves from miles away. It’s about three hours drive from Cape Town. Best in summer when the southerly winds coming in (I’m told).
