There have been some memorable matches at Wimbledon, the 1980 final between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg which saw Borg come out on top, the 1999 final between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi that some cite as the greatest display of grass court tennis ever, with Agassi remarking on his opponent that ‘today he walked on water’. There was also the 2008 final that saw Rafa Nadal overcome Roger Federer in one of the most fiercely competitive and brilliant matches witnessed, where the spirit and conduct and ambition of the two men epitomised the brilliance of great sport. Wimbledon has its fair share of legends and these rouse together at the end of June to create a special atmosphere at the SW19 venue.
There is much more to Wimbledon than the great tennis however. The atmosphere is one of a by-gone era, English tranquility still exists with the strawberry’s and cream before the roars of Henman Hill, currently changing into Murray Mound, are heard backing the latest British hope. Yes, the weather doesn’t always live up to expectations but that’s half the experience of Wimbledon and the atmosphere in the stands and also in the compound is enough to get you through the delays, even if the Pimms isn’t!
Wimbledon is a much-loved British event that makes even tigers like John McEnroe falter at the romance conjured up by the mere mention of its name. As part of the grand slam, the competition is always of a good standard and its location means that central London is but a hop away on the tube once the champions have been decided.
