Drama is added to these narrow rowing boat races by the drumming used to keep pace and the ornate dragons heads carved to the boats sterns and an event can be very exciting and colourful to watch.

The ceremony to bless the boats is held first thing in the morning then races take place all day and there are parties, victory celebrations and fireworks in the evenings. There are also the fantastic dragon dances where teams of dancers form the dragon’s body and move like one animal.

Historically Dragon Boat races commemorate the suicide by drowning of a Chinese governor in the 3rd century BC, who preferred to take his own life than see his city over run with a neighbouring army. Locals tried to save him in their fishing boats, but it was too late. The Stanley Harbour competition has included multicultural and ex-pat teams since the 1960’s however in recent years there has been a lot more international interest in the events and there have been teams representing more countries. In 2001 143 teams of 22 competed in the event.
