The art of Muay Thai, or 'Thai Boxing', varies from region to region and has evolved both in terms of philosophy, and style and technique, since ancient times but the basic concept of making a connection between the physical and the spiritual to achieve the greatest level of skill has remained an integral part of the sport.

The principle behind Muay Thai is to concentrate not only on the application of basic moves in various situations, but also to learn posture, balance and logic so that the most injury can be inflicted with the least energy expenditure.

Modern Muay Thai is very popular as a spectator sport and is covered by more rules and restrictions than the ancient Muay Boran (literally 'ancient boxing'), which involved some literally lethal moves. However, joint-protecting pads and often abdominal protection are used as well as gloves, since the feet, knees and elbows can be used to attack as well as the fists, and the ritualistic and spiritual element of the sport has been retained. Students of Thai Boxing pay homage to their teachers and express their principles and beliefs annually in a formal ceremony, and before every fight, in the form of powerful, graceful sequence of dance movements which can also serve as a warm-up and a method of intimidating opponents.

Some schools still teach the gloveless Muay Boran but most specialise in Muay Thai, for example the Horizon Muay Tahi Boxing Camp on the island of Koh Phangan, in Southern Thailand.
