Designed by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, the Allianz Arena is a stunning piece of architecture located in the north of Munich, Germany. The smooth outer façade gives the stadium a unique look and also helps serve a key function. As both Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich use the ground, as well as the national team, architects were asked to design a stadium that allows all teams to be present. The translucent shell does this with its ability to be lit in different colours, the shell glowing red for Bayern, blue for 1860 and white for the national side.
The three terraces that can hold up to 66 000 spectators ensures proximity to the action and creates an intimate atmosphere that belies the sheer scale of the stadium. Bundesliga matches are played with much determination and a home game involving Deutschland is an event that leaves your hairs standing on end as the passionate support bellows round the stadium.
