An informal race down to Guadeloupe and back in the 60’s to mark the end of chartering season for these Classic Class yachts - these are the ones that look like Jay Gatsby would have at the back of his house in Long Island - was the start of a now formal annual event. Starting with the grand old ladies, the J Class, built between the two World Wars, in which class in a good year there are some 60 old girls, there are classes with as few as two entrants – because vessels that were built in the 19th Century take a lot of work to keep going. The difference between this race and others is that the owners of a newer boat may admire its beauty, but they’re also going to love speed and may be inclined to replace their steed with a faster model in a few years, but the gentleman owners of these graceful old madams are with them till death do they part.

The thing about ‘Classic Class’ yachts is that they’re old and take a lot of looking after, so a ‘Spirit of Tradition’ class had been introduced to the programme for newer boats built to look like older boats – above the water line at least. People search the world for these old ‘Gatsby’ boats but they’re aren’t a lot of them to buy and fix up, so seeing them racing is a sight like no other and one to be coveted, especially when it takes place on the beautiful Caribbean ocean. Anticipate a week to ten days worth of the most graceful sailing imaginable in a tropical island setting.
