The Imperial War Museum of London chronicles British military involvement throughout the twenty-first century. You don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate the museum’s four floors of collections, which engage the visitor with hands-on exhibits, films, artifacts and displays.
The museum’s bottom floor includes a labyrinth of artifacts and displays from World War I and World War II. The trench warfare exhibit reenacts life in the trenches – complete with dark and winding paths only occasionally illuminated by the blasts of mortar shells. Don’t miss the exhibit on the Holocaust. It takes at least an hour to see all of this collection, which chronicles the persecution of Jews and other minority groups during the Nazi regime. Housed in the loft of the building is the Crimes against Humanity exhibit, a thirty minute film about genocide and ethnic cleansing throughout the world.
Even the museum building itself is steeped in history. The Bethlehem Royal Hospital, more commonly known as “Bedlam,” was housed here until the 1930s. Bedlam, the world’s first psychiatric facility, was made infamous for its cruel treatment of mentally ill patients.
