This museum has the extra responsibility of being the city's main war memorial, so its collection contains not just important local and historic artefacts, but also many additional memorial items collected from conflicts.

The shell of the museum is one of Auckland's most iconic buildings – a neo-classical delight of pillars and carved marble in the Auckland Domain – but the real appeal are the treasures inside. Here is housed the world's largest collection of Maori and Pacific Island artefacts, including more than one and a half million natural history specimens, more than a million images and a very impressive Maori war canoe from 1830.

On the war side are the exhibitions covering the New Zealand commitment to both world wars and the names, carved into marble, of every Aucklander to lose their life in any of the 20th Century conflicts.
