As the Acropplis Museum filled quickly in the 20th Century and discovery after discovery was made it became more and more clear that another museum would be needed to house the more complete and growing collection. This problem has lead to the removal and ‘storage’ of some of the Acropolis’s treasures in other museums and the failure to return some pieces when requested, the Elgin Marbles, being the mostnotorious. The idea for the New Acropolis has been hashed out over many many years and suffered numerous problems but it would seem that it is finally finished, complete with the perfect space for the entire collection of marbles from the Parthenon’s frieze.

One of the main problems with the construction of this modern building is that the ground reserved for its construction is littered with archaeological treasures, so the design had to raise the building off the ground. The end result of this is contentious but effective. Effective for the exposed area of dig lying by the entrance ramp and the glass floors of the lower level which allows you to walk on ancient streets without ‘walking on them and contentious because of the very modern look of the architecture.

The display for the Parthenon Marbles is impressive, an entire level at the top to the building is reserved for them where they are displayed in their correct dimensions around the inside wall, at a level where you can actually see the entire story played out. The outside wall is all glass so you’re also seeing them in natural light – just like you would if they were still attached to the Parthenon, but without the problem of weathering. Out of the windows you can also see the Parthenon itself not 300 metres away. It remains to be seen whether the entire collection is every properly reunited, for the moment the Elgin marbles are replaced with casts of the originals.

The New Acropolis Museum website says approximately 4000 pieces make up the collection, it doesn’t say whether or not that includes missing or borrowed pieces the museum hopes to eventually display.
