Just nine months after Nepal’s centuries old monarchy was abolished, the former royal palace was turned into a museum. The BBC has described some of the rooms on show as grandiose, one of these must be the ex-king’s library – containing books on mythology, arts, culture, history and also a bit of Dickens and Agatha Christie!
The spot where the royal family of Nepal were brutally massacred can be located on the site even though the outbuilding where the murders occurred was quickly destroyed.
One passageway is one adorned with famous and respected monarchs and presidents who visited Nepal during the 1970s and the 1980s – such as Queen Elizabeth II, Juan Carlos I of Spain and President François Mitterrand of France. This was before its descent into war and political unrest.
The bountiful and extensive gardens of the palace are also open for viewing. Some areas of the palace still remain off limits though, including the living quarters where the ex-king’s stepmother and step-grandmother still reside and buildings currently being used by the foreign office. The number of people allowed to visit at any one time will be restricted, so you’ll need to get there well before the doors open in the morning to ensure you get in on time.
The gold and silver throne sat upon by the monarchs of Nepal is on show, something beautiful and ostentatious – even the ex-king himself Gyanendra is allowed to come and visit his former home.
