This building was opened in 1964 as a private museum and became a part of the Smithsonian Institution in 1979. The building features history and artifacts from Africa, the beginning of humanity.
This museum is located on the National Mall with it's main entrance in front of the Smithsonian Castle on Independence Avenue. This museum is underground along with the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
Some of the exhibits currently on display include Artists in Dialogue 2, Africa Mosaic: Celebrating a Decade of Collecting, Brave New World, Walt Disney- Tishman African Art Highlights and Ceramics are the National Museum of African Art.
The National Museum of African Art is opened everyday except for December 25 and admission is free.
