If you're thinking this building looks a bit austere, it might be because until 1792 it housed a Benedictine convent. The French Revolution caused some problems for the nuns though and afterwards the building was used to house art and artefacts confiscated from other clergymen and noble families. When items of an interest to Natural History or archaeology buffs started to infiltrate the collection it really began to expand and at the beginning of the 20th Century a lot more collections opened to the public. Some of the collection's highlights include work by Manet, Gauguin, Simon Vouet, Rembrandt and Rubens. In the objets d'Art category the museum has some Limoges enamels, stoneware from Japan and China, ceramics from the far east, and some nice Islamic pieces. Most of the museum's antiquities come from ancient Egypt, its collection was started by a 400 piece donation from the Louvre – today they have at least nine rooms worth of Egyptian artefacts. The museum also has a room for Ancient Greece

Some of the most view worthy pieces are in the courtyard, two Rodins, a Venus by Aristide Maillol and Carpeaux at work by Emile Antoine Bourdelle.
